What Are You Feeding Your Senses?
When we think about nourishment, most of us think about food.
What are we eating?
Is it fresh?
Is it wholesome?
Is it giving our body what it needs?
But perhaps nourishment is about far more than what sits on our plate.
Every day, we are also "feeding" ourselves through our senses.
Through what we see.
What we hear.
What we read.
What we watch.
The conversations we have.
The environments we spend time in.
The people we surround ourselves with.
And the thoughts we repeatedly allow to occupy our minds.
All of these become part of our experience of life.
🌿 The Quiet Inputs We Often Overlook
Modern life is full of stimulation.
Phones.
Notifications.
News.
Television.
Traffic.
Social media.
Podcasts.
Music.
Conversations.
Opinions.
Information.
Even when our bodies are physically still, our senses may be taking in an extraordinary amount of input.
And because so much of it has become normal, we may not even notice the effect it has upon us.
Yet perhaps it is worth asking:
How do I feel after spending time with this person?
How do I feel after watching this program?
How do I feel after scrolling through social media?
How do I feel in this environment?
How do I feel when there is finally silence?
These simple questions can tell us a great deal.
Some experiences leave us feeling energised.
Others leave us depleted.
Some create calm.
Others create tension.
Some inspire us.
Others fill us with fear, comparison or overwhelm.
Perhaps this is nourishment too.
🌿 Listening Beyond Words
World Listening Day recently reminded me that listening is not simply about hearing what another person says.
True listening requires presence.
It asks us to become quiet enough to notice.
To notice another person's words.
To notice their tone.
To notice what is not being said.
To notice the sounds of nature.
To notice our own thoughts.
And perhaps most importantly, to notice what our body is communicating.
The body is continually giving us information.
Fatigue.
Tension.
Restlessness.
Calm.
Energy.
Discomfort.
Ease.
Yet if the noise around us is constant, how easily do we hear these quieter messages?
Sometimes we may not need more information.
We may simply need less noise.
🌿 A Different Kind of Diet
We often think carefully about the food we eat.
Perhaps we could become equally thoughtful about the information and stimulation we consume.
Consider your own sensory diet.
What are you looking at every day?
What voices are you listening to?
What conversations are you participating in?
What environments are you choosing?
What messages are you repeatedly receiving?
And perhaps...
What are you allowing into your life simply because it has become a habit?
This does not mean withdrawing from the world.
It means becoming more conscious of how we participate in it.
Just as we can choose more nourishing foods, we can also choose more nourishing experiences.
A walk in nature.
A meaningful conversation.
Beautiful music.
Laughter.
Quiet.
Sunlight.
Creative expression.
Time with someone who leaves us feeling seen and heard.
Or perhaps simply sitting still long enough to hear ourselves again.
🌿 Perspective Changes Everything
Recently, I floated over Melbourne in a hot-air balloon.
Looking down upon a city usually filled with movement, traffic and noise, everything seemed different.
The roads looked smaller.
The buildings became part of a much larger landscape.
The busyness below seemed strangely distant.
Nothing had changed.
And yet my perspective had.
Perhaps life is like that sometimes.
When we are standing in the middle of the noise, everything can feel urgent, overwhelming and consuming.
But when we create a little distance...
When we rise above the immediate situation...
When we become quiet enough to observe rather than react...
We may begin to see things differently.
And perhaps hear things differently too.
🌿 Nourishment Is More Than Food
At The Raft of Life, I often speak about nourishment as something much broader than nutrition alone.
We nourish the body through food.
We nourish the mind through thoughts and learning.
We nourish our emotions through relationships, connection and expression.
We nourish our spirit through meaning, creativity, nature and stillness.
And every day, consciously or unconsciously, we are choosing what enters our world.
Perhaps one of the most important questions we can ask is:
What am I feeding myself through my senses?
Does it support the person I am becoming?
Does it bring greater clarity?
Greater peace?
Greater connection?
Or is it quietly draining the very energy I am trying so hard to restore?
🌿 A Simple Practice
This week, try creating just a little more space.
Turn something off.
Step outside.
Close your eyes.
Listen.
Notice.
Breathe.
And ask yourself:
What can I hear when the noise becomes quiet?
Perhaps the answer has been there all along.
We simply haven't been still enough to hear it.
Yours in health and happiness
